What kind of bug is this?

We've got a problem and I do not know how to handle it, nor do I even
know what kind of bugs these are. I've never seen them in my entire
life before.

We live in New England in a woody suburban home. We've got two types
of bugs that are somehow getting in the house and preparing to nest
(if not already).

The first we call the Potato Bug or Stink Bug. It looks like a
Ladybug, though a little grayer and darker, and when you squish em'
they stink to high heaven. The smell is a strong potato-like smell.
They fly and leave an orange resin behind when you mush em.

Any ideas on what they are or how to get rid of them?

The second is a strange looking insect. It resembles a weevil, but it
is large, hard and slow. Brownish in color and able to fly. When you
squish em they smell like pungent leaves.

Any thoughts?

I picked up some Interior Perimeter Defense Spray from home depot that
listed over 25 different insects that could be treated with it. It did
nothing. These buggers keep coming in and they don't seem to
aknowledge the spray whatsoever. The spray did kill a spider, though.
Figures.

Any thoughts or help would be grately appreciated! Thanks, SB

There are a number of insects/bugs they could be. Box elder bugs and conifer
seed bugs are some that could be what you are seeing, or many of the cousins
that happen to thrive in your neck of the woods. They probably aren't nesting
but just wintering over until next Spring, if the weather is a bit warm they
may stay active and find their way into the house. Hard to say what can be
done to help without knowing exactly what you have. :/
