I have ants in my attic. I only know that because they have
come out to take over one of my hummingbird feeders.

I'm in central Texas, and these ants seem to be red and
black. Slightly bigger than fire ants. I've never seen
them in the house.

If I stick up one of those ant bait things near the hole
where they enter/exit to get to the hummingbird feeder,
is there any chance they'll visit it and carry the bait
back to the rest of the colony? Or must I take more drastic
measures?

Thanks,

Uh oh. I just looked at some pix and I think they're
carpenter ants. Mine are red and black just like the
picture.

my neighbor told me they have problems with carpenter ants but I've never
seen any other than the small black ones. A little away from the house I've
seen larger ants that are all orange.

Thanks,
Google Acrobat Ant and then look under images and see if that is not
what you have...they will all be the same size where carp ants will be a
variety of sizes. I have heard Terro works on them if you apply it where
they are entering the structure but I have never tried it myself.

acrobat ants..not the best pic but the abdomen of these ants are heart
shaped and they ant will be the same sized many times closely trailing
each other. Loading Image...

carenter ants... their trails will be made up of different sized ants
and their trails will have the nants spaced out from each other... they
will have a rounder to more oblong abdomen

I'll have to look again. These are probably the acrobat ants. They were
trailing pretty close to each other.

I read about mixing just a little boric acid with some jelly and putting
it near the opening. I think I'll try that. Think it'll work?

Maxforce Granules seem tp work ok for them along with just getting an
insecticide up into the nesting area.

I once tried a mix of grease and boric acid and put outside under rock
with lots of ants - nothing happened.

You also made good point that ants are different and respond to
different insecticides. We have not seen ants anywhere for a week after
using treatments I described.
