Discussion:
IGR's for roaches

I was reading a post on bed bugs that got into cockroach control. The
question came up about using Gentrol for roach control in the first
treatment.

ABSOLUTELY!

Not only does it inhibit development into adult roaches, it also
stimulates feeding. Gravid (pregnant) German Cockroach females do not
eat near as much as normal, and by applying Gentrol to treated areas,
those females will feed on baits when applied. Once that bait kills
momma, the eggs will not hatch either. So not only do you get the
reproduction / development cycle broken, you also get population
reduction.

Here's my process:

1. Vacuum
2. Apply Maxforce Select FC
3. Apply Maxforce Small stations
4. If not a food area, apply Avert Dry Flowable into voids
5. Apply Boric Acid Dust into electric plates and outlets.
6. Apply Gentrol
7. Follow-up in 2 weeks with inspection and removal as needed.

Just my process, and it works for me. How do others attack german
cockroach infestations?

Basically use the Max Force gel baits along with the gentrol...will
use flushing agents to determine where pockets of harborage are.
I usually don't deal with german roaches except what may have been
brought into a home via the maids so they are easily taken care of. I
did take on a store/deli type set up that was over run with GR's (to
break up the routine I guess) about a month ago and on the follow
services a great reduction has been noted...will be surprised to find
much on next weeks treatment.

Light infestation (low roach odor and few if any spotted during day):
1) Maxforce Roach bait.
2) Gentrol Point Source or Gentrol IGR Concentrate
3) Deltadust under appliances, in outlets and anywhere else I don't
want to bait and/or don't want roaches to harborage.

Medium to Heavy infestation (definate roach odor, roach poop readily
visible, oothecas here and there, etc...)
1) Cy-Kick along baseboards, wall joints and (if unoccupied residence
w/o popcorn cieling) along wall/cieling joint.
2) Lesco Flushing in cracks and crevaces. (drives them through the
Cy-Kick and can kill them itself).
3) Delta Dust, Nibor-D in cracks, crevaces, under appliances (except
refer, just blows the dust right out...Lesco there instead), behind
switchplates.
4) Apply Gentrol IGR to all baseboards, under all appliances, into
cracks and crevaces and on all non-food-storage areas (but as close as
possible).
...2 weeks later...
5) Check for activity with Lesco (wall drilling may be necessary at
this point since there is a lot of paneling used in my area).
6) Bait with Maxforce Roach Bait (never have used FC yet), and Avert
Roach Bait.
7) 1-week later do a followup.

Complete elimination usually gained within one month... depending on
the structure, whether it's occupied and if it's a single family
residence or not.

Sounds like a lot of work, I know, but it works for me... I don't like
the slow approach when the infestation is really bad.

Really bad = years and years of roaches. Roaches having to be removed
from the kids' ears in the home by a doctor. The scent of roaches
from outside the home. Roaches hiding in the doorframe because it's
just too damn crowded inside. Dead roaches completely filling the
window tracks.

In case you don't know what a bad german roach infestation smells
like... imagane a smell somewhere between rotten wood and urine. Just
think about peeing on rotten wood and that's the smell.

I can tell you about BAD infestations! Treated a house once that I
vacuumed for several hours to remove the EXPOSED roaches - changed
bags out 5 or 6 times - and baited all areas. This was the absolute
WORST house I saw! I have one to treat that has roaches running around
on the outside! I used to specialize in roach control, and have seen
the worst.

Worst case I've seen was when this Korean restaurant I used to do
smuggled in a fruit called something like "g'aho'kok". Sort of a
small orange with a big pit.

Well, I figure they brought one of their own roaches (at least one) in
the cardboard box.

Turns out it was a Korean Sabertooth Crotch Roach. Very rare in the
U. S. but I guess they get them all the time in Korea.

The thing got up in the hanging cieling, so, naturally I tried to
flush it out with Lesco first.

That didn't work so I tried baiting with Maxforce. 12 ounces of
consumed bait later, I found the first of many egg capsules. This
thing was as big as a loaf of breat - no kidding.

I knew spraying it wouldn't do any good so I took it outside and ran
it over with my truck... what a mess.

I had to come back several times. I knew it wasn't dead because the
darn roach would peel and eat bananas, kick-over tables and poop
everywhere.

Well, I didn't want any more of these, so I loaded the restaurant with
255 Gentrol Point Sources. The roach ate 12 of them the first day...
so I think it worked.

Then I finally was able to smuggle enough Cynoff out of our lock-up to
kill the roach. I baked a cake, but instead of using flower, I used
the Cynoff. For frosting I used a 25% boric acid recipe an old
wise-man from Australia gave me.

Two days later we found the roach dead. I'm positive it died from
eating my cake, but the owner thinks it drank itself to death, as
there were saki bottles littering the floor all around it.

Now... beat that!
